Earphones

If you’re on the lookout for a high quality bible recording that won’t cost you a cent, then read on.  This story is making it’s rounds on the net and I thought it would be great to make this resource known here at LayGuy also.

A word of warning though.  Although free, if you want the whole bible, you’ll need to do a fair amount of work to get it.  Having said that, you can easily download high quality MP3 recordings of entire chapters – up to 500 versus at a time.  Without further ado, here’s how:

  1. Head over to the ESV bible online.
  2. Click on the “Options” link in the top right hand corner.
  3. Don’t worry about the visual options for now, head down to audio options and select “MP3 (David Cochran Heath, complete Bible).”
  4. Press “save” at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Do a search on the chapter and/or versus you want to download.
  6. For the purpose of this exercise, I’m searching Genesis 1
  7. Genesis 1 pops up onto the screen.  You’ll notice the “(listen)” next to the chapter title.
  8. Right click “listen” and select “save link as” (Firefox) “save target as” (Explorer) etc.
  9. Choose a place to save it on your computer and rename the file to something meaningful – such as “Gen 1” in our example – make sure you add “.mp3” after your file name.
  10. Save and download it.

This can then be easily be listened to on your computer or transferred to an MP3 player or iPod.

Crossway are the publishers of the ESV and have made this resource available for all – very generous despite the times we live in.

And the quality?  Well just have a listen to this…

Awesome!!! Faith Comes By Hearing just released a dramatized word-for-word ESV as well. It’s available for free download and I think it’s amazing to listen and read the Word together. It slows you down and helps you absorb what God’s Word is saying to you.

Not sure how I feel about this, only because while they have the option to stream for free, there is a section for downloading the files and it looks like they have to be purchased (http://www.crossway.org/catalog/download.audio.bi... It seems like this is kind of going around that option to download from the streaming files. While I dont really agree with how much most most bibles and audio bibles cost, I stil wouldnt feel right about getting mine in this way, but that is just my opinion and I dont mean to sound like Im judging anyone.

I get where you're coming from – although your link doesn't work. However I'm all for getting the word out there at no cost at all. Like you said, these guys make a tonne of money via their usual publications.

I was able to get the entire David Cochrane Heath ESV onto 4 CDs, and it sounds FANTASTIC! I do not consider that to be unethical in the least—if they want to practically give away these files without the cognizance to realize that this is what they're doing, then the fault lies with Good News Publishers. If they truly respected any semblance of a copyright, then they would not have given me and others such easy access to them. I do not consider this "theft" in any wise. Besides, ideally, the Bible should NOT be SOLD in any way. God's word should be freely given and freely recieved.

Just a quick note for all who might be wondering (as Craig):

The official ESV blog mentions this method for helping you memorize scripture:

    http://www.esv.org/blog/2009/02/memorizing-scripture-with-your-ipod/

So it should be ok. :-)
