The Future In Computers..

authorLayGuy | May 30, 2007

I can’t stand Tom Cruise - mainly because of his pathetic conviction on Scientology. The way that religion manipulates people and intimidates critics is disgusting to say the least.

However as an actor, I like watching Tom. One of my favourite movies is Minority Report - a real mind twisting, techno gadget film. A geek flick to say the least. Some of my favourite scenes are when Cruise is manipulating the almost holographic computer displays as they search their database for would be killers and ways to prevent the crime before it happens.

It’s super cool and I often wonder when that kind of technology will be around cause most times I am online or on the PC, I have a gazillion things happening at once. Having one input device, the mouse, seems like such a waste of resources.

So this morning I wake up and check my feeds and thanks to John Chow, I stumble on this beauty…

Bring it on Microsoft!

Heaven…

authorLayGuy | May 28, 2007

Do you really want to go to heaven? Is this a place you want to bust you butt on earth walking in faith only to end up sitting on a cushion cloud wearing a diaper while your wings get tangled in the harp you’re playing? And doing this forever! And ever and ever….

Nope - I’ll pass thanks. Heaven, as portrayed by many Christians, sounds like a dump. I’d be bored in 5 seconds in that kind of heaven. Thankfully, this warped perspective of Heaven is based on mankind’s warped thinking. But my buddy, the Apostle Paul, was inspired by God’s Spirit when he quoted the words of Isaiah…

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him”

So thankfully, whatever man thinks about heaven is kind of way off the mark. Phew!. This is good news for me. After watching the following clip, you would under stand why..

This kind of presentation makes Christian’s look a little whacky if you ask me. Sure it may have been relevant back in the 50’s or 60’s - and yes there is a lot of truth in what’s spoken. But the way it was delivered back then makes no sense to the way we are now.

I do love, however, the imagery given in Revelation 21 on the physical dimensions of the place! It freaks me out to fathom what this kind of place will look like. So I can safely ditch the “cloud in diapers” view - who on earth came up with that in the first place!

To me heaven is not the end goal. There are so many interpretations about heaven. Do we spend eternity in heaven or on a new earth? Does heaven descend onto earth? Is heaven a place where you have lots of time? Or the question that should be asked is, “what’s it like to have no time? There is no yesterday, no tomorrow - just now!”

Nah, to me, these things aren’t that important. What is important is that Jesus will rule in eternity. Whether He does this in heaven or on a new earth, is of secondary importance to me. I know it will blow me away beyond my wildest expectations because my carnal mind cannot fathom spiritual realities.

My biggest motivation lies in the following scripture found in 1 Corinthians 13. I will know things a lot better only once, because of Jesus, I am there.

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

The Path Of Least Resistance

authorLayGuy | May 26, 2007

This phrase has been on my mind so much lately. In the last 24 hours, I must have had 4-5 conversations with people about it. When this happens, I usually get the impression that God is making an impression on me. I have never had God “tell me” anything. I don’t know if He has a deep, masculine voice, or a higher pitched voice. I don’t know if He speaks really quickly or slowly. All I know is when He speaks, it’s powerful! Just ask “darkness” when God said, “Let there be light!”

But when I find myself “stuck” on a thought like this, I like to sit up and take notice - like God is tugging on my heart and saying, “Listen kid, I want you to learn something here.” So I guess a good way to look into this is to write a post. I will come back in due curse and post a comment to myself to record what’s happened!

The path of least resistance is the path we take 99.9% of the time. When things get too hard, or stress and exhaustion creep in and cloud your thinking, or you face ridicule or opposition to what you want to do, what’s your natural reaction? Do you like to throw your hands into the air and declare, “it’s all too much for me!”

When society, as a collective whole, decides to do this, what do we end up with? I submit to you that the net effect of following the “path of least resistance” is an ugly, shallow and purposeless reality called “mediocrity.” Our lives become so empty, dull and void, that we spend our lives walking around like zombies wondering, “what’s my purpose in life?”

Many try to numb the void with careers, entertainment, sport, drugs, alcohol, sexual pursuits. They pick up hobbies and spend hours in shopping malls doing “therapy” to mend the emptiness.

It’s no wonder that some of the highest paid people are entertainers and sports people. The path of least resistance drives us to our couches to watch others acting to be someone or running around like headless chooks in an attempt to beat someone else. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with sport, but when it’s used to plug a hole of emptiness, then it’s a poor Band-Aid at best.

Trodding along the path of least resistance will see you finishing life and leaving no legacy behind. Mediocrity does not build legacy. Mediocrity promotes nothing really, cause nothing stands out in your life different to others. This path is the wide road where many people travel.

History is full of people who have tread a different path. A path which has changed the course of mankind in ways which seem incredible to the simple. Think of examples like the Spartans in the current blockbuster film “300.” These 300 Spartan Warriors et al held off the advancing Persian Army long enough for Greece to rally together an army to finally defeat the Persians in their pursuit to conquer Europe. Alexander The Great was born 100 years later and finally destroyed the Persian Empire and Greece became a world empire and dominated culture for centuries. The New Testament is written in Greek.

Think of other historic figures such as Christopher Columbus and Captain Cook and the way their lives had had a massive impact on the world we now know. Obviously there are sinister characters who have also traveled this path. Think of people such as Hitler, Napoleon and Osama Bin Laden.

A favourite group of mine who have treaded along a different path are the Apostles and the Early Church. Apart from John, most Apostles were murdered for their faith. Many Christians were used as bait at Gladiator tournaments and fed to the lions. They could have denounced their faith and tread along the path of least resistance. But they didn’t. They stuck to their guns and changed the course of history and through them, Chritianity exploded onto the world scene.

I suggest that you will not make any difference in your life, your family, your friends, your church or your society unless you tread down the path OF resistance. Positive progress in anything GOOD will involve pain, sacrifice and resistance. We humans are a sad bunch really cause we want change but are unwilling to do anything to bring about that change - like it will magically happen despite ourselves.

To see how this practically plays out, here are some examples:

  • You have sin or issues in your life? Swallow your pride, repent and change your life - no matter the cost.
  • You have issues with friends and family? Have those difficult conversations and address the issues without sweeping it under the carpet. Approach the situation with humbleness and realise that all parties involved, especially yourself, are sinners and need redemption.
  • Things aren’t working at church? Realise that Jesus is in heaven and has left you on earth to continue the revolution He started. Repent of your moaning and groaning in service. Take stock of your situation. Abide in Jesus and let the Father work through you. Enough of finger pointing and excuses.
  • Want to change your city? Become missional. Engage society the way Jesus engaged mankind. Become one of them in order to connect and then lead them to Jesus. Don’t conform to culture. Instead establish a counter culture

In writing this post, I have realised how easy it is to be on the path of least resistance. But that path leads to mediocrity and blandness where sin, and the effects of sin, rule. Join me in jumping off that path and onto one full of resistance, full of obstacles, full of trials. Take up your cross and follow the One who has tread that path already. He said that if we tread this path, our life will be abundant.

Not mediocre.

Make Money Online

authorLayGuy | May 24, 2007

If you’re on this page and reading this right now, chances are you spend a fair bit of time online. You may even have a blog or two running in the background. Wouldn’t it be good to be rewarded for the effort you put into your blogs?

I had a free Wordpress account for a couple of months and loved it! The only thing is that it didn’t give me the flexibility I wanted in regards to:

  1. The theme or template of my blog.
  2. The ability to generate a bit of income from my blog.

So I did the jump from wordpress.com to wordpress.org. I hosted my blog at BlueHost (banner located below) and created a hosted Wordpress blog. Choosing a theme was fun and rewarding. But the challenge for me is now to monetize my blog.

And that’s where I turn to John Chow. I’m so new to blogging that I still have my wrapping on. The world of monetized blogging and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and all the other buzzwords confuses the daylights out of me. That’s where John Chow steps in and lends a hand.

John Chow dot Com is blog that helps you make money online. John likes to share his knowledge of what he has learned over the years and describes his site as “The Miscellaneous Ramblings of a Dot Com Mogul.”. We’ll his ramblings are pretty spot on for me as they provide heaps of tips on how to monetize your blog and, in my case, improve your hosted Wordpress blog.

A couple of posts I have recently checked out, and plan to act upon, include:

And there are hundred’s more just like this. There’s stuff for beginners like me, to advanced users - all laid out for free on John’s site. If you are new to the world of blogging and hungry for information, check out John’s site now.

Furthermore, if you do a review of his blog, he will link to you so his readers can check you out. Mind you, John’s site is a Google Page rank 6 - getting a link back to your site from such a site is pretty cool!

From The Mouths Of Babes…

authorLayGuy | May 22, 2007

As a father of a 19 month old boy and and a 3.5 year old girl, naturally anything to do kids has a special place in my heart. Any decent parent would sit up and take notice at even the smallest development in their child. And us parents would do anything to help facilitate development in our children.

You can begin to imagine then how I sat up and took notice of a post in one of my favourite blogs - Church Relevance. Here they show a YouTube video of a 13 month old reading cards after going through a program called Your Baby Can Read. I love Church Relevance’s conclusion on this matter:

A child is never too young to start learning about God.

Childproof your church nurseries with the baby geniuses in mind.

Here then is the YouTube clip:
